If you haven't yet noticed, the education system has a lot of acronyms: STAAR, TEA, PTO, ADA, AYP, ESL …
One that will make a difference to your child each day is TEKS—the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. It's pronounced "teeks." The Texas Education Agency, which develops and implements the TEKS, defines them as the state standards for "what students should know and be able to do."
Those STAAR tests your son or daughter take at the end of the year? They're based on expectations spelled out in the TEKS. So, during the school year, your child's lessons will be based on the curriculum, and, at the end, he or she will be evaluated on how well the lessons were learned.
